Kill Malaria Mosquitoes with Foot Odor

Turn is not just humans who can smell the aroma of dizziness during foot odor, but also mosquitoes! Not just a headache, can even die. The method used by researchers in the fight against malaria to attract mosquitoes and then set him up.

The traps use the smell of human feet in socks to make sense of mosquito attraction becomes four times larger, said Dr. Fredros Okumu, head of research projects at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania. Mosquitoes that flew into the trap is then poisoned.

Socks in the form of nets was also shown to substantially reduce the number of malaria cases are fatal. However, unfortunately this method can only be done indoors and can not effectively fight mosquitoes outdoors.

"The goal of global eradication of malaria would not be possible without the presence of new technologies," said Dr Okumu who also suffered from malaria, as quoted from Yahoo on Wednesday (13 / 7).

Dr Bart Knols Dutch scientist who first discovered that mosquitoes are attracted to the smell of human feet. He found him standing naked in a dark room and let the mosquitoes bite body parts.

Now, Dr Okumu has been awarded additional funding by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Grand Challenges Canada to create a mosquito trap at an affordable price that can be used outdoors. Dr Okumu also said more research is needed to find the right place for the trap. When the trap too close, people will have a greater risk to be bitten, but if too far, the device will not be too effective. (MI / ICH)
